Music in French

June 15th, 2008

I’m a huge fan of music, that’s no secret. I love music from various different countries, and at the moment I’m going through a “French” phase where I’m listening to music with lyrics in French. (Note – when I say French, I also mean Québecois.)

These four songs are the ones I’m currently loving. What French songs do you like?

I love les Cowboys! And… So much more! I can send my favs if you want. I have loads! <333345

  2. Les feuilles mortes by Coldcut (Autumn Leaves) is quite a good one. I think it sounds much better in French than English anyway…

I hope you have a Japanese phase, I can think of lots of songs to recommend for that!

  3. Chantelle says:

    I like Carla Bruni’s Quelqu’m M’a Dit and Helena’s L’âge De Ma Mère. :) They both have soft voices – I don’t know if you’ll like them.

  4. Regina says:

    Camille – Le Festin, and
Corneille – Parce qu’on vient de loin
    are my two favourites. :)

  5. Shen-Shen says:

I have a couple French songs, both by Kyo, which is, according to my French obsessed friend, one of the most popular French bands.

“Je Cours” and “Dernier Dance”, both by Kyo!

  6. Annie says:

    The one with a taxi. Er…Taxi? :P

  7. Sarai says:

    Anything by Lara Fabian!

  8. Amanda says:

I actually only have the one French song, and it’s SUPER old school.

Edith Piaf – Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

  9. Kai says:

I really love “Miss Monde Pleure” by Les Innocents… it’s totally 90’s and amazing. Les Shades are also really good, I like most of their stuff… and so is “Aicha” by Khaled – if you like Bollywood-style French pop :)

I love the layout, by the way… you’re so talented !!

  10. Hanna says:

Rufus Wainwright sings mostly in English, but I really love his song Cœur de Parisienne – Reprise d’Arletty <3. Another one is Manau’s Le chien du forgeron.

Let me know if you German phase :P

  11. Juice says:

Les Nubians – Makeda is my favorite French song of all time =)

  12. Chien Yee says:

The only French group I listen to is Il Divo… At least I think they’re French O_O

  13. Gem says:

I am also in love with les Cowboys. ♥ If you like them, you might also give Mes Aïeux a try–they’re kind of in the same vein. I’d also recommend Ariane Moffatt, who’s also from Québec.

    Seconding KYO as well.

I’ve liked what little I’ve heard of Cali so far. :)

  14. Robmarie says:

I swear Rachael, sometimes you read my mind. I’ve been meaning to post a thread in Snark asking for French artist/song recommendations… but of course I keep forgetting about that.

I really like Manu Chao — although most of his songs are in Spanish, he has a fair amount of French songs as well. My two favorite songs from him are “Je ne t’aime plus” and “La vie à 2″ — I highly recommend both of them =]

I also LOVE the French version of “Paint it Black”, by Marie Laforet [Marie Douceur, Marie Colere]. AWESOMENESS!!

  15. Robmarie says:

P.S. Sorry for the double-post… but I can’t believe I forgot Edith Piaf! Edith FTW!

  16. Baohan says:

Mine is Adieu Monsieur Professor. It’s a song to say goodbye.

  17. Nika says:

    OMG, French rock = <3!

My favourite song is currently (well, for last six months, which is a lot for me) Cendrillon by Téléphone (especially the live version). <3 Everything else by them is also great.
Next, I like a band called Indochine, some of their songs are L’aventurier and J’ai demandé a la lune.
Then there’s this punk rock band which I think you like, BB Brunes. By them I like Houna and Mr Hyde.

Other french acts I like: Les Cowboys Frignants, Les Trois Accords, Lady Commandement (a very local band from Bourges), Louise Attaque, Madame Kay, Magenstria, Matmatah, Mickey 3D, Noir Désir, Nous Non Plus, Déportivo.

Sometimes I also listen to French oldies, like Edith Piaff, Charles Trenet, Joe Dassin and Boris Vian. We sing songs like that in French class. :D

Erm, and I also love Carla Bruni’s Quelqu’un m’a dit (it was in a Slovene TV commercial and we also sang it in French class) and I’ve heard it so many times I know the lyrics by heart.

Sorry for such a lengthy comment. -.-

    CA PLANE POUR MOI!

  19. Aisling says:

You caused me to listen to all my Quebecois music on my playlist, because I missed it. :P Umm, so to add to my list (my other message was short because I wrote it from my phone!): Kain (my favs <3), Mes Aieux, Pierre Lapointe, Kodiak… umm… “I Lost My Baby,” by Jean Leloup! So so so much. :P

  20. Stepherz says:

I love Je T’aimais, Je T’aime, et Je T’aimerais by Francis Cabrel. :)

  21. Alex says:

Lara Fabian is obviously my favorite person ever, but there are many more people love… Garou <3, Marc Lavoine, Patricia Kaas, Joe Dassin, Hélène Segara, Natasha St-Pierre and, um, yeah, Céline Dion :)

  22. Pema says:

I don’t listen to French songs, but I do love Hindi. I’m not Indian, but I love the songs and dances in Bollywood movies… I’m near crazy about them. :)

  23. Kristina says:

    Les Breastfeeders?

    That’s an original name XD

  24. Kristine says:

I think I may be going through an “Italian” phase since I’ve listening to Italian songs for weeks and I don’t understand a word, yet it’s such a beautiful language. I’ve heard plenty of songs in French and that is another language I’d like to learn.

Quand Le Rideau Tombe by Blue… It’s pretty old and it’s sung by a British boyband.. I prefer the French over English.

  25. Nat says:

Yeah it does sound pretty good. I got into some frtench hip hop a few years back that was wicked!

  26. Aaron says:

Feist’s version of “Tout Doucement” is currently in heavy rotation in my current listening. If you like more electronic/pop music, then “Ce Jeu” by Yelle is also very good. “Pour que l’amour me quitte” by Camille is another one that I like.

  27. Christine says:

oooh. i dont listen to any french music.. i feel out of the loop! I’m going to have to check out all these recommendations right away!

  28. frankophile says:
