If I ravished your mind

Today Amanda blogged about singing whilst driving, and how it can lead to a momentary bond with a stranger. Not ten minutes before reading her blog entry, did I have the exact same experience of my own.
Unlike Amanda, I wasn’t listening to Justin Timberlake / Madonna. I was listening to Avenged Sevenfold. I wasn’t listening to Beast and the Harlot this time (for once!) I was listening to “Scream”. This is a rather loud, stomping song (hence why I love it) with heavy connotations in the lyrics.
I was driving through my high street with my music thumping in my car (and yes, I did feel like a chav) and it was hot so I had the windows open slightly. I pulled up at some traffic lights as a group of school children crossed. I was completely lost in the music and didn’t realise that they could hear me.
When I noticed that the group of teenagers were looking at me and smiling, I realised that they could in fact hear the song that I was listening to. I smiled back and for the few seconds it took for them to cross the road (and for Avenged Sevenfold to belt out “Scream, scream, scream, like you would if I ravished your body. Scream, scream, scream, like you would if I ravished your mind.”) we were friends.
Oh how I love my town sometimes.

Making friends is fun =p Even if it’s just for a short time and you know you’ll probably never see them again. I’m learning to drive, but I can’t even comprehend being able to drive properly with music on at the moment, lol, I envy people who can do that.
LOL, last week some dude was blasting out Soulja boy in his car. Obviously all the old ladies around were either too deaf to hear or shaking their heads and tutting at his loud music. I just looked over and grinned at him. :p
I’m always hoping for some sort of musical connection a la “That’s How You Know,” from Enchanted. *I* often burst into song and dance, especially in parks, but with the exception of two or three instances, I’ve never been able to engage strangers enough to get them to join in. Some of my friends do pipe up as well, but more often than not, I randomly sashay down the path, with a slightly dazed looking Patrick Dempsey-type trailing behind. I don’t really mind, because I think quiet, subdued people are adorable, but sometimes it would be nice to have a spontaneous dance number happen around me.
Why was there school kids crossing the road!?
Easter break ftw.
@Aisling: I do that all the time! Unfortunately only two of my friends have been trained to join in a spontaneous musical way. With one I usually sing Sinatra and the other I sing ‘My Favourite Things’ from the Sound of Music
Both guys as well! Random harmonies! Squee!
And Rachael, I can imagine those teens thought it was quite amusing that a very average looking girl pulled up in her adorable Fox blasting a song by A7X (because they are the most girly, sweet, bubbly band ever) XD If I were in the car with you I would have totally bust a move.
I love those kinds of moments, when you seem to connect with a complete stranger. I wish they happened more often!
I sing while I drive, but never at a stop light lol. If I did, people would give me weird looks.
What is it about music that bonds people so well? I love it when that happens — especially when the song has a deeper meaning for me. I guess it’s easier to “click” with people because they acknowledge what I’m feeling!
If that had happened to me, I’d have been mortified. Probably because teenagers in my area wouldn’t smile if they saw that; they’d point and laugh. ![]()
So, I guess that happens more often that I thought ![]()
Lately I’ve been driving with my windows down because my air conditioning broke down, so I have to make the volume of my music a little louder to be able to hear it over the city noises. Most of the time when I stop by another car with the windows down, the driver looks at me singing and smiles. It was embarrassing at first, but then I got used to random strangers smiling at me because of that. It’s a nice feeling, until of course some bitter citizen gives me evil eye because he doesn’t like my music ![]()
I love hearing my kind of music in other peoples cars. Usually however I do not have to make any sort of deal out of it. My kids say “My mom listens to that” loud enough for the person to hear. I also subconciously make eye contact with the people playing my kind of music. However I try not to stare at those playing Marilyn Manson. ![]()
Sometimes I wish I could play the music just for the pedestrians, fun!
Oh yes, I get this…
I have my MP3 player wired to the car audio system, and it’s preloaded with most of AC/DCs albums, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Manowar, even some Bon Jovi… I don’t play it overly loud though… but it’s more than bass enough to “sound” loud.
Many times now Jem’s mum has seen me going to work, flinging it round a roundabout whilst headbanging away… but I can’t help that… AC/DC just hits buttons..
That said, I can hold a running conversation with the Astra..”that was a bit close..”, “NO, We’re going THIS way…”, “1..2..3..close eyes, and S..L..I..D..E..now correct the slide, miss the bus..and..park. Excellent..” and so on. Needless to say, the kids tend not to walk in front of me..
Reply: I can’t say that I often talk to my car. She’d probably argue back. “What the hell did you do that for?!” “Are you sure you have a license?!” etc.

Haha that’s an interesting situation. I hope it wasn’t too embarrassing. ^^
