Catchphrases » March 20th, 2008 · See comments
You are the weakest link, goodbye!
It seems most TV hosts have a catchphrase of some kind, a little phrase that you can automatically associate them with. That got me thinking about whether it’s only TV hosts that can have phrases like this, or can mere mortals such as myself have those phrases too?
I don’t think I have any specific “catchphrase” (I’m not like Paris Hilton in that I’ve tried to coin the phrase “that’s hot!”), but, there are certain phrases that I say far too often. There are certain phrases that I use far too often on IM / forums, and that I say far too often in real life as well.
If someone says something to me that impresses me even slightly, I’ll often reply with “Oh wow!” and that can often make me sound patronising. I guess I’m just easily impress. “Ooh gosh!” is another common one.
If I’m unsure about something and someone explains it to me, I’m most likely to reply with “Oh! Okay.” which will make me sound even more easily impressed (and possibly even more patronising as well).
I’m not a fan of nicknames / petnames at all. In fact, I hate them. Despite this hatred (call me “rach” and face my wrath), I have a bad habit of calling people “dude”, whether they’re male, female, or non-gender-specific. However, I don’t call just anyone “dude”; they have to be a good friend / my sister in order for that to happen.
When someone asks me how I am, I reply 99% of the time with “Not bad. Not bad.”
Gosh, I’m far more predictable than I’d like to admit.
“You’re fired!” – Donald Trump. I like that catchphrase.
I don’t think I have my own catchphrase, though. And I don’t think you use “Oh wow!” or “Ooh gosh!” very often, but I probably don’t notice.
There’s nothing wrong with being predictable!
“Don’t forget, these are 866 numbers not 800 numbers. Dial carefully!” – Ryan Seacrest from American Idol (Gosh he has to repeat the same ol’ stuff all the time!)
I don’t think I really have a catchphrase myself. Maybe I should get one?
Mine is most likely something along the lines of “tea and cake or death!” which I say far too often. Yours isn’t bad, though! Much better than Donald Trump’s!
*looks around* Did I not absently mention to you this afternoon that I say “Gah,” And “Ooer,” far too often? Did you write this before or after I said that? Because I *just* read this, *right now* at 6.19pm MDT.
So… yeah, my friends say I say “Gah,” and “Ooer,” so often, that they are now the best words to describe me. As in, if they were to play word association, and hear my name, one of the first words they think of would probably be “Gah!” I’m not sure if that is a good thing, or not…
I use “Oh, wow!” a lot, which I picked up from my friend Jade, somehow. I also get quite wide-eyed when I say it, and I’ve been told my reactions are reminiscent of a seven year old. Lovely.
I wonder if I have my own catchphrase..I’m going to have to keep track of what I say
yum, inconsistency. Written just like that (yes, that’s important) is my current online catchphrase. I don’t use it that often, but when the need arises, you can guarantee there will be a message from me saying that.
Calling someone dude is great! I do it to my kids. They get called little dudes.. and they are both girls! Maybe its just cos I am the ultimate fan of the only dude that counts – Jeff Lebowski
I call people “dude” or “man” regardless of gender — it’s a habit that I’m trying to modify.
As for catchphrases, I tend to overuse:
- “That’s INTENSE!”
- “That’s EPIC!”
- “Whaaat?”
- “That’s messed up”
- “That’s crazy”
It all depends on who I’m with, really. I have a friend with whom I’ve given up arguing/having too many in-depth conversations with, so I just spend an hour or two replying with “Wow, ok” or “That’s crazy”. It’s quite tiresome.
So do I, it drives my mum and co-workers nuts.
Hmm.. thinking about it. I have a few things I’m known for.
When people ask; “what’s up?” I always reply; “The sky
” (smile included)
And When people ask me how i am, i always reply; “Peachy keen like jelly beans!” or sometimes! if i want to shake it up, i’ll say “fine and dandy like sugered candy”. it’s just my thing that people expect now ^^
(oops. i’m reading this inbetween running reports at work and i’ve somehow accidentally quoted myself when trying to quote you!! My first sentence was in reply to the dude thing. I think I did it on the post above too. Sorry hun ~_~)
Reply: That’s okay. The “cite” attribute is for the person’s name and is really not needed here. The text you’re quoting goes in between the tags.
I find myself increasingly saying “have you tried turning it off and on again?” :s
Eep…
I always call you Rach. I refer to you as Rach in conversations because I know a ‘Rachele’ here and she only goes by Rach. Becomes habit.
..Sorry.
>.<
Hum… let me think… When i disagree with someone or they don’t give me good argument i’ll say: Come on!!!!!!(in the way of you can give me something better than that)
I love saying:” shut the F$%* up!” even if i speak french. I love inventing new words in french or turning a word into a verb!!!
I love saying like Seb from SP “it’s not nice!”
