How do glasses get so dirty?

I’ve needed glasses since I was thirteen years old, and when I was sixteen my optician told me I needed to wear them all the time. I tried out contact lenses but they freaked me out beyond words. It’s not natural to have something sitting on top of your eyeball all day, I tell you!

That gave me only one optionĀ : glasses. I have two pairs actually (they had a sale on - buy one get one free). One pairĀ are black and plastic, some would say in the “emo” style. The other pair are purple and metal, more “sophisticated” than the black ones.

I’ve noticed that no matter what I do, no matter how far away I keep my greasy fingerprints, my glasses get disgustingly dirty. No amount of wiping them on my jumper, wiping them with a lint-free cloth, or wiping them with lens-cleaner seems to make the grubby bits disappear.

Tell me I’m not the only one with that problem!

story of my life is that *nods* I personally think it’s caused by my eyelashes brushing against them all the time *shrugs* bugs the hell out of me but there’s nothing I can do about it LOL

I wouldn’t know, I don’t take mine out of their case :P

@Cassie - Mine don’t really get dirty on the inside, they’re on the outside. It’s ridiculous because I try *so hard* to keep them clean. (BTW - you’re comment #1000 since I converted to WP!)

@Jem - *insert Mother-style speech about destroying your eyesight here*

I have this problem too and add that to the fact that my glasses give me a headache and I don’t wear them much!

I sat on mine and broke them about 5 years ago and now I daren’t go back to the optition incase they ask why I don’t wear them!

Rachael said:

@Jamie - It sounds to me like you need a prescription.

@Carly - That’s terrible! Make an appointment tomorrow!

Yep, it is from the dust in the air and all the nasties in the air. I hate it. I swear my glasses spend more time off my face then on my face.

At least you could wear contacts. My eyes open to wide to hod the contacts in. Or at least that is what my optician told me when I asked about them when I was 20. So I am stuck with my blue plastic ones. The wire in the wire rims give me a rash for some reason, so I can only wear the plastic.

Yes Rachael it is all you!

No actually my new glasses I got last week are the same as yours you have had. I thought ti was the tint at first but nope no matter what I do they get ‘dirty’.

You aren’t the only one! Mine get dirty as hell and I don’t even wear them all the time! I only wear them to drive, to read blackboard when professors write on them and to read the menu board in fast food restaurants XD I don’t even remember ever touching the lens, giving the impression that they dirty themselves up just because they like to be dirty…

My dad has a cream used to clean car’s windshields, he says that it is very expensive, and it keeps glass clean. He showed me ow it worked with a mirror, by cleaning it with the cream, and them - no matter if you exhaled onto it or touched it, it wouldn’t get dirty! It seemed magical, but I don’t feel safe applying that to my glasses (they cost me over a month’s salary)… I afraid that it might stain the lens or something. Maybe they make some of that magic cream for eye glasses…

I have the same problem, when I actually wear my glasses. I only ever wear them for a maximum of one hour in a day watching TV or looking at the whiteboard, and they still get totally icky. I’ve managed to scratch the lenses by wiping them with abrasive clothing, so I don’t do that anymore :3

I have the same problem. I can usually manage to keep them (more or less) clean, but it irks the hell out of me when dust and bits of dirt get between the actual lens and the frame. And I can’t get rid of the grubbly bits near the joints!

I have two pairs as well, the same style as yours, actually the only difference is that my “serious” ones are silverish blue, not purple.

I also have contact lenses, but I don’t wear them very often.

lol! Story of my life I’m afraid. I’m always cleaning my glasses no matter how clean I try and keep the blooming things.

Er…I won’t be any use here.

You are not the only person with that problem. Luckily I only have to wear mine for far away things, so I put them on to see the blackboard at school and that’s pretty much it. But even though I don’t use them very regularly… they still seeem to get dirty!

My glass get so dirty that it’s not fun any more… They usually don’t get clean either.. Annoying things :P

Kaylee said:

It’s strange how they get dirty so easily! I think the air must be really dirty or something :P

Mine get dirty too. Grrr. Especially at work. I *can* wear contacts, but I prefer not to. They’re a bit uncomfortable.

You’re the only one with that problem.

Lawl. Actually, I wouldn’t know. I don’t wear glasses.

@Rachael - I do need a prescription but I can’t afford to pay for everything (exam, frames, lenses) since our insurance sucks.

This happens to me too!! I am so frustrated with it, i decided to google it lol, and here I am. It seems as though my eyes are releasing some sort of dirt! Perhaps it is the air, I don’t know, but someone needs to invent something to fix this!
