I hate Christmas
This entry was posted on November 30, 2007
Every year towards the end of November, it seems like the whole world is being taken over by Christmas. There’s adverts on television, there’s adverts on the radio, there’s thousands of websites dedicated to Christmas; even bloggers are making new layouts just for this once-a-year event.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against every part of Christmas, I’m just against the parts that take over the world. I don’t like the fact that Christmas stuff starts appearing in the shops before Hallowe’en. Can’t we at least get that (and November) out of the way before we start Christmas?
There are many things I love about Christmas. I love giving presents (even if some people have no idea what they want), I love spending time with my family, I love having time off work, I love over-eating, and I love having those little sausages wrapped up in bacon.
I just hate the fact that Christmas is like some kind of plague which takes over the world and makes everyone act like mad people. It’s Christmas; it’s not the apocalypse. There’s no need to get so stressed and worked up, and sing Christmas carols and send millions of Christmas cards. Just calm down, take a deep breath, and think about what Christmas is supposed to be about. It’s so commercialised these days that we (myself included) don’t even pay much attention to the true meaning of Christmas anymore.
To me, Christmas is a lot like religion: I know where to find it if I want it, but if I want to stay away from it, please don’t force it in my face everywhere I look!

Haha, that’s a good point comparison of Christmas and religion. I had noticed that Christmas is all over even before Halloween, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I like Christmas so much that seeing it everywhere just reminds of good things ![]()

Christmas and the hype that surrounds it is really inevitable. Instead of fighting against it, go with the flow and just enjoy.
Oh, Amber, I *do* enjoy Christmas… on December the 25th.
Pfft! The excitement is half the fun. ![]()
I’m quite apprehensive every Christmas myself. I don’t have a lot of money and I feel obliged to have to buy stuff for people because they insist on getting me presents, even when I tell them not to. ![]()
Belinda, Christmas does not have to be expensive?
Are you creative in the arts and crafts department? You could make people stuff, which’ll work out cheaply. Or you could get them obscure presents where it’s impossible to tell the price. You don’t have to spend ten million pounds (or dollars? :P) on everyone.
I have now reached the point in my life when I don’t now what I want anymore. Or what I want is to expensive. To me, presents is just a symbolic thing…
I love the spirit around Christmas!
Christmas and religion are the same thing, lest we forget this is a religiously specific holiday to celebrate the birth of Jesus
I hate it when it comes early too. I feel excited for all of two weeks before it wears off and I can’t be bothered to do anything but be a Scrooge.
Christmas would be so much better if it started closer to the actual day. I don’t understand how people can love it after dragging it out for 2 months!
I kind of agree, mostly in the sense of it seeing to come early and early every bloody year! I like Christmas but before Halloween and November is ridiculous! I am guilty of the Christmas layout thing but that’s just me, I usually have a layout change for holidays. Always have done. ![]()
I love the build up to Christmas more than the actual event! Ha ha. The shopping and excitement is amazing.
I agree! I hate Christmas, I hate the over-commercialisation, I hate the carols, the tinsel the trees, everything.
Christmas celebrations start in October. OCTOBER for crying out loud.
^ October is NOTHING! We have advent calendars and stuff in stores from September! And the whole thing carries on until January! It’s a one day event strung out to months!
Christmas would be much nicer if it were just a few days, a fortnight at most.
Giving/receiving presents should be banned, then people will know to reason for Christmas…mwahahaha. Hah :P.
I love December and Christmas is my favourite holiday, but the joy is spoilt by the occasion being over commercialised. Oh, and by people who only consider the gift side to it :/.
WOW! Change of layout. Loving it!

I am looking into hand book-binding… I’ve seen a few tutorials, and if I can do it well enough I am going to make my mum and dad one each, perhaps a cross between a personalised notebook and scrapbook. Probs won’t be able to though!
I second this post of yours. I wish I would have thought about this first. *sticks tongue out @ Rachael*
Oh really, Christmas is the most amazing time of the year! I absolutely love it…especially the smell of Christmas lol. Everything is so cheery and exciting. Except for Christmas shopping…I hate it!! Places are ALWAYS packed and grrrr.
Perhaps people go crazy with Christmas because its the one thing that practically everyone celebrates? I mean…not everyone celebrates Easter…or one of those other stinky little celebrations. Christmas is by FAR my favourite.
Ever been to a Costco in August? It’s filled with Christmas stuff. Nutcrackers, Santa statues, snow shaped decorations, fake trees… in August! It doesn’t bother me much, but it’s ridiculous that they have to get the stuff out so early.
I love Christmas for the time spent with family and the giving/receiving of presents (which sounds so materialistic). The food is also great… I have no problem with it being shoved in my face all of the time when it comes to the two months leading up to it, though. The biggest problem I have are the ads after Christmas: “[store name]’s big BOXING DAY BLOWOUT!”. Grr…
I agree with your loves and hates. I try to concentrate more on the loves and just enjoy myself. Another love: vacations! Even if people don’t travel, they get out of school for awhile, and usually work for at least Christmas day.
I honestly don’t feel anything until the few weeks before Christmas. Then it’s all cosy and happy and I love the feeling. (This is mainly because it’s when my family and I go away on vacation.) I think that if Christmas starts so early, it doesn’t seem as special when the day finally arrives. I want to hit somebody when I see all the Christmas stuff in stores when I start school.
I like Christmas, but I agree that stuff shouldn’t be out in stores until December starts once Thanksgiving and all is out of the way.
Perhaps if I spent one Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere it’d feel more authentic to me what with the snow and it being winter…but here in New Zealand Christmas means beaches, barbecues, and hot weather. I definitely think I’d enjoy Christmas more if I celebrated it in the traditional way.
My Mum had our decorations out about three days ago, and she has so many lights, and bits of foliage and candles (we like to have a yule theme, with green leaves and red bows etc) it’s like bloomin santa’s grotto in here!
Normally everything goes up around the 20th, but after our bad news about our Dad my Mum is detirmined to make this the best Christmas as it’s very likely to be his last. Fingers Everything crossed it isn’t.
I still feel like everyone on the street thinks we’re a barmy family because of it, and even if we are consuming half the villages share of electricity with our l.e.d lights alone, It still makes me smile! Especially this little robbin teddy thing she bought! It’s cute!
I love the feeling of walking into the mall, and seeing all those pretty decorations up :), Christmas is just like back to school shopping…it’s like just before summer vacation starts, they start advertising all the ‘cool’ new sales for pencils and stuff!
I LOVE Christmas… though not during July :P. I’m very happy with it starting on the 1st of December and lasting till January 3rd-5th XD
But like you it’s the gift hunting. Up until now, I was glad to receive them. But ever since I work, I’m so hyped up about what to buy, how to wrap it, where to hide it.
If mom’s birthday shopping wore me out… I try imagining it 3 times as much.
I agree though, that there is no reason to start on Halloween. Stop reminding me that another year has ended ![]()
Scrooooooooooooooooooooooge ![]()
I like Christmas, but don’t like how it’s too commercialized.
Although there seems to be less of that this season. Or maybe it’s because I’ve been to focused on school and work to pay attention to other things, that I haven’t noticed.
Which reminds me, I need to start shopping.
*musters up the strength*
I love Christmas too… I love it most during the fall… the “thoughts” of christmas…
but then comes December…
The buying frenzy…The music over and over again…
I want to spend December having FUN with friends and family, not buying gifts.
I think a Christmas party is something I may start doing in December instead of gifts…
ONE party for all.
$700.00 limit and FUN FUN FUN….done…
Then a quiet family day on Christmas.
