New Layout
This entry was posted on October 7, 2007
As you can see, I have a new layout up. If you can’t see the new layout then you’re probably seeing a cached version. Hold down the control button while you press f5 to refresh and it should sort things.
I’d like to thank Ben for testing the layout in Safari on a Mac for me, and Matt for helping me fix the bugs, and for generally being a helpful moose. This means that the layout has been tested in Vista and OS X with Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, and Safari. Please let me know if something unexpected happens with other combinations, especially Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6.
Aerial recently wrote a review of Calm Banana, in which she stated that my site looks like “just another blog.”
She also stated:
You know enough about design; you know enough (a lot) about how to produce a well-structured site with valid code. Rachael, I would love to see you design your own theme—something simple, but original, something with bananas.
Now, I may not have bananas in this layout (I tried to draw one but failed miserable) but I hope I delivered on the simple and original part. How did I get on?

Ooh, I like this. I would REALLY like to see you do a layout with a banana with sunglasses lying on a beach… Haha. Maybe you can get a pair a really small sunglasses and take a picture? xD
You might be missing the banana but it’s definitely calm! It looks great ![]()
^ You’re not the first person to suggest that actually, Lily. Arien said I should draw a banana sipping a cocktail for my header.
..or maybe we can pretend the tree in the picture is a banana tree.
There I go again with my lame jokes! D:
^ You can pretend it’s a banana tree if you’d like. ^_^
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love new layouts!
As I told you earlier, I really like it. The background makes me feel like I’m in a cabin :). How about centering your navigation links? The stretch of green to the right of the links annoys me.
It looks break! I love the wood texture for the background. ![]()
Very pretty, although I feel a little bit squished in this eeny-weeny comment box! Is it really supposed to be the same width as the other inputs? It doesn’t look like anbody else said anything…
Hmm… well, yes, I suppose this comment box is quite squishy. I don’t really pay attention to actually focusing on what I type though, since I have full confidence in my abilities to touch type.
I do love this layout; the colors and background specifically are fantastic. It feels very sleek and clean cut–two things I love in a website.
I also just love nature layouts. ![]()
I’m not too keen on it but it’s all about personal preference really. I think it’s to do with the wood grain texture background.
I like the header image though, the shades of the sky looks beautiful.
I like it
and it looks ok in XP with IE6

*stares and makes resolve to finish her own… soon*
I LOVE IT!
My resolution is 1280×1024 and the background is… different on the right edge… compared to the left one.
@Vera - that’s because you’re not seeing the whole of the pattern on the left-hand side. It’s basically like a wooden floor.
@Leila - you are absolutely right. In my half-asleep daze at 11pm last night when I was making this layout, I forgot to style the form inputs! *will fix*
Your new layout is awesome Rach. ![]()
^ Awh, thank you very much!
Wow =) Great job on the new layout! The colours go really well together. Simple and very calm. ![]()
I definitely prefer this to the free template you were using.
^ Because it’s nicer, or because it’s Rachael-made.
I agree, though, and like I’ve said before, the premade was just a temporary measure till I came up with something more substantial. I think this layout is definitely more substantial. *nod*
I love this layout
Why thank you, Matt.
Yey, trees! I love this theme. The background is very interesting. =)
I love this theme! You stole my idea for a wooden background you :p Hehe, I’m only kidding it looks fab. I’ll speak to you sometime this week, hope you don’t die from boredom at work D: Take care.
^ Sue me.
I shall speak to you soon.
I really like this; it’s so pretty and “calm.” It’s very much “teh win” in terms of Rachael-made-ness, simplicity, and originality. A banana is completely unnecessary at this point. ![]()
I want to see a clam in your next layout. ![]()
Beautifully! I love the colours you’ve used. Only thing is, there doesn’t seem to be enough contrast in the link colour you’ve used in your navigation. The background is just insanely awesome.
“Because it’s nicer, or because it’s Rachael-made.”

Awh, thank you! *hug*
