My 3 laws of blogging

1. Encourage discussion.

I try and talk to my visitors, rather than at my visitors. I think this helps encourage discussion, which is one of my favourite things about the Internet. I always try and write entries that you’ll probably have an opinion on and might want to discuss. I love hearing from people, and I try to encourage this with my blog entries.

2. Be interesting.

No one cares that I got up at half eight this morning, skipped the shower because I was in a rush and almost ran over a pheasant on my way into the office. It’s pointless drivel and no one needs or wants to hear about it. People would much rather read about topics they can relate to, such as how to make websites (especially for free!). I know I’m not the most interesting person in the world, but equally I don’t think I’m entirely dull either.

3. Never mention anything you wouldn’t want your Mother to know.

My Mother knows how to use google, and calmbanana.co.uk is top of the list when you search for my name. This means there’s a high chance my Mother could find and read my blog! If she read something on here, she’d no doubt mention it to me, and I’m not old enough to die of embarrassment / shame! That’s why I never mention anything in my blog that I would have a problem discussing with my Mother.

What are your blogging laws? Do you talk about topics that you’d never mention to your Mother?

I agree with #3, not for my mother but in case employers or something! Though I hide my full name.

as for #2, blogging tips are great but it’s important not to overdo it I think… you don’t want to typecast yourself!

I don’t think I have laws. Just whatever is even mildly entertaining to someone I guess!

I agree with everything you said, especially #3. I follow by “blogging laws” like yours :3

Awh, poor pheasant! There’s a pair of them that live near the Tesco’s here :D Very cute.

I completely agree with the above. And in the case of #3, if you want to discuss mature topics use an alias so you can’t be tracked!!

^ Oh yes, Lil, because that wouldn’t be obvious at all. “Today we have a guest writer, Racquel, and she’s going to discus… bondage!”

Kidding. You’re the pedantic.

I agree definitely with #3. I unfortunately do #1 and sometimes #2. :P

Along with guest blogger Lilith who can direct you to high street fetish gear.

(They’ll never know. ;))

I just blog about whatever I’m thinking. Unless it’s boring or stupid. But, you know, I don’t really have any rules - I just blog as I go.

I definitely try to encourage discussion, since I end my blogs with a direct question (sometimes readers need a little nudge!).

I try to be interesting - don’t know if it works, though!

Those are some very good rules.

I think blog writers should try to avoid ranting/complaining too much, and try a bit of variety in the subjects they talk about.

And in reference to #3, bloggers should be mindful of who is reading their blog. Some things may be used against you if you’re not careful… Unless that’s what you want!

Yeah, I try not to talk too much about my parents and things they do that I don’t like because of her maybe remembering my domain name and reading it.

I agree with Clem though… I don’t really have rules but maybe if I did something different I could get more comments. :p

My mum doesn’t know how to turn on a computer. *phew*

… Or does she…?

Well, I’d agree with number 1 and 2. I don’t know about nr 3. My mom doesn’t care about blogging. I don’t even think she knows this exists. She’s too busy with work.

However my boyfriend knows and reads it, so I can’t pretty much say whatever. So, yeah, I must say I agree with everything.

Rules, I don’t think I have besides avoiding talking about things no one cares about. Sometimes hard cause you gotta take it all out of your chest, but…

Hehe Google doesn’t return my site among its result when you search for “Vera” :P But my mom knows my site’s URL (have a bad habit of bragging).

As for number 2 - that’s quite relative. If you’re a good writer, you can pull anything off. I remember having once blogged about how I had a terrible toothache, and people loved it. So I’m aiming towards being able to blog about virtually anything and still manage to entertain my visitors.

My number one rule is DO NOT DESTROY YOUR BLOG.
After that, I agree with #3, for sure. I always tell my mom that she CAN read my blog, if she wants, but I would PREFER if she didn’t.

Yes, I hate it when offline people read my blog. It makes me feel…uncomfortable. But I had to tell my mom, because she needed to know what I did when I spent all that time on the computer, and then she told a bunch of other people. Now, a lot of times when I’m going to write something I don’t, because who knows who in my family and extended family will read it?
